Corneal Ulcers

What are Corneal Ulcers?

Ulcers can occur on the cornea, often causing pain, blurring of vision and discomfort from light. Often they are preceded by some form of trauma. Urgent treatment by the doctor (usually an eye specialist) is essential. Most ulcers are responsive to early treatment, but the longer the delay, the less chance of success there is.

A great number of causes can produce ulcers on the cornea. Infections following an injury of some form or other are common. Ulcers may follow another infection that has been incorrectly treated through self-medication without professional advice (e.g. using hydrocortisone eye ointments in the case of herpes simplex infections of the eye). Sometimes they are due to an extension of an infection further afield, such as a blepharitis (infection of the lid margins).

Home remedies have no place in the treatment of corneal disorders, and symptoms described demand the prompt attention of a doctor, who in many cases will quickly refer the patient to an eye specialist.

Sometimes a child may brush against a bush or twig, causing it to slide over his eye and cause awful pain. How serious is this and is there any effective treatment to ease the discomfort?

This simple accident may graze the cornea of the eye and produce an ulcer. It is very painful, aggravated by light. It may water and the vision may blur. Infections may gain a foothold.

Corneal Ulcers Treatment

There is no simple solution. There’s no place for home remedies either. The child must receive prompt medical attention, ideally from an eye specialist, but see your own family doctor first. It needs expert attention and therapy.
