Crying

Generally speaking, babies, as they become older, are placid in nature, and tend to be peaceful and happy. So, if baby starts crying for no obvious reason, is there usually a cause for it? Babies usually cry when they are in pain or uncomfortable.

Wet or soiled nappies are a common cause of discomfort. Babies usually cry for a reason, so mother has to determine the cause and bring relief. Change nappies as quickly as possible after soiling. Apart from the discomfort, wet or soiled nappies, if left on, can produce irritation and skin rashes very easily.

A hungry baby will be an unhappy baby. Inadequate food, or food without enough nutritional value, will mean baby’s stomach will feel empty, and the pangs of hunger will set in.

And what better way of sharing this unhappy state than to cry? It brings attention, and perhaps a bottle. Wind accumulating in the stomach (the result of inadequate burping after the last feed) is notorious for producing internal discomfort. Wind can distend the bowel if it goes lower down the intestinal tract. A distended bowel produces pain. Conversely, part of the bowel may go into spasm, and this, too, is very uncomfortable. Proper burping is essential after every feed.
