Matthew 17:1-9; Mark 9:2-10; Luke 9:28-36
Six days after this, Jesus called Peter and the two brothers James and John. He had a big surprise for them so together they climbed a nearby mountain to pray. When they reached the top, Peter, James and John lay down on the ground. While they were falling asleep Jesus began to pray. Suddenly, He looked very different! Light seemed to beam from Jesus’ face and His clothing became dazzling white and flashed like lightning.
Then, as if out of nowhere, two men appeared. There was Moses, the man who had led the people of Israel out of Egypt and received the Ten Commandments from God and there was Elijah, the greatest of all the prophets! Moses had died about 1,500 years earlier and Elijah had disappeared into heaven almost a thousand years before. Now they had left heaven for a few moments and come back to earth to talk with Jesus.
The three disciples woke up with a start.
“What has happened?” They gasped. They heard Jesus talking about the time coming soon when He would go to Jerusalem and then leave them. Peter was scared.
He said. “Teacher, this is too good to be true.”
He wanted two important men to stay longer but just then, a bright cloud came over the hill. It was like a white fog swirling mist around their feet. A Voice came out of the cloud. “This is My Son, My chosen One. Listen to Him!”
The disciples were terrified and they fell face down onto the ground. When the Voice stopped, Jesus came to them and said. “It’s all right, you can get up now, there’s no reason to be afraid.”
Slowly, they opened their eyes and it was as if nothing had happened
