Pacific Ocean Facts



  • The Pacific has some of the greatest tides in the world (over 9 m off Korea). Its smallest tide (just 0.3 m) is on Midway Island in the middle of the Pacific.
  • On average, the Pacific Ocean is 4200 m deep.
  • Around the rim there are deep ocean trenches including the world’s deepest, the Mariana Trench.
  • A huge undersea mountain range called the East Pacific Rise stretches from Antarctica up to Mexico.
  • The floor of the Pacific is spreading along the East Pacific Rise at the rate of 12-16 cm per year.
  • The Pacific has more seamounts (undersea mountains) than any other ocean.
